A Lifetime of Photography: Colin and Laurie's Legacy (2026)

A New Chapter for Colin and Laurie: A Retirement Story

A Tale of Passion, Photography, and a Community's Gratitude

For over two decades, Colin and Laurie Rouse have been an integral part of the Dubbo Photo News family, capturing the essence of local life through their lens. But now, as they embrace retirement, their journey takes an emotional turn.

Imagine a life dedicated to the art of photography, where every click of the shutter tells a story. That's exactly what Colin, 70, and Laurie, 66, have experienced. Their association with Dubbo Photo News has been a testament to their talent and dedication, but it's time for a well-deserved break.

"It's a strange feeling to step away," Colin shared, "but we're excited for a quieter life." And with their health taking priority, retirement offers a chance to focus on what truly matters.

But here's where it gets controversial... In an era of technological advancements, the photography industry has evolved, and so have Colin and Laurie's roles. From being the go-to photographers for all occasions to adapting to digital technology, they've seen it all.

Laurie explained, "Colin was a renowned photographer, supporting a family of seven with his craft. It's not common for photographers to do this full-time, but he did, and he raised and educated his children through his passion."

And this is the part most people miss... Behind every successful photographer is a supportive partner. Laurie was the backbone of their business, handling the behind-the-scenes work that kept the wheels turning.

The new millennium brought challenges. With the rise of digital photography and cheap processing, their business faced an uphill battle. They invested in a $250,000 digital processing machine, but the competition from large chain stores was tough.

"We had to start again," Laurie recalled. "It was a difficult time, but we adapted."

Colin's transition to videography brought new opportunities. He became the go-to videographer for eisteddfods, capturing the energy and talent of performers. Laurie added, "We traveled, we worked, and we loved every moment."

In 2004, their paths intertwined with Dubbo Photo News, and a long-lasting partnership began. Colin's social photos graced the pages of the newspaper, and their work became a staple for the community.

"Making the front page was always a thrill," Colin admitted.

Eleven years ago, they found their "forever home" in Wellington, and their impact on the community grew. Their photos brought the town to life, and their dedication to delivering newspapers became a beloved public service.

But with retirement, a new chapter begins. Colin and Laurie can now enjoy the fruits of their labor, continuing their passion for photography and videography on a more relaxed scale.

"Photography and videography have evolved," Laurie noted. "It's a different game now, but we're grateful for the memories and the impact we've had."

So, as they turn the page on their professional lives, we say a heartfelt thank you to Colin and Laurie. Your contributions to Dubbo Photo News and the Wellington community will not be forgotten.

We dedicate this week's front page to you, and we wish you a retirement filled with health, happiness, and many more beautiful memories.
